alternate 70+- route that avoids the steepest climb. The alternate will start
at Calahan Emporium at 7:30am. This is a Siskiyou County classic 100mi loop
with over 10,000 feet of climbing.. We start in the quaint town of Etna; then
to the old mining community of Callahan; the work now begins for the 12 mile
climb to Carter Meadows with a reward to follow, the great descent to the
remote village of Cecilville. We will follow the South Fork of the Salmon
River to Forks of the Salmon community. At the Forks we will have a no host
lunch, bring your lunch to Etna and Pam will carry it to our lunch stop for
you. We then ride upriver to Sawers Bar, home to the oldest and still in service
church in Siskiyou County. Both rides continue up river for a few miles until
the Idwild Camp at the foot of the 12 mile uphill grind. The 70 milers will
then have an opportunity to sag for the drive over the Etna Summit grade.
The Centurions will continue over the 12 mile grade that has five miles of
12-1/2% sustained grade. After a treacherous descent both groups will meet
at the city park in Etna. This scenic 101 mile loop will visit some of California's
most remote mountain communities. Peter Eddy is the 100 mile leader-work 938.3404;

Lakes Challenge-New name, new route, new date, new start/finish location!
The Mountain Lakes Challenge replaces the old Ashland Triple Challenge. Same
great scenery and epic climbs, we’ve changed the tour to Saturday, found a
fantastic new rest stop on the shore of Howard Prairie Lake, and solved the
pre– and post-ride parking hassles. If you haven’t cycled the Cascade-Siskiyou
region of southern Oregon, brace yourself for a wonderful experience. In late
June the wildflowers are at their peak. With a backdrop of Mt. Ashland and
Mt. McLoughlin, you’ll ride by meadows, four dazzling lakes, and conifer forests
of the Cascade highlands. The two century rides (97 and 58 miles)
begin and end at Walker Elementary School in Ashland, while the shorter ride
(27 miles) loops around two lakes up in the Cascades, starting at Hyatt Lake.
After the tours, we’re serving special artisan burritos (chicken or vegetarian),
a side of stone ground corn tortilla chips, a fresh-Mex salad of olives, tomatoes,
corn, zucchini, red onions, and other seasonal fresh vegetables, accompanied
by a choice of cold drinks, and desserts.
Register by mail by requesting a form from Siskiyou Velo at P.O. Box 974,
Ashland, OR 97520, or downloading one from the Siskiyou Velo website http://www.siskiyouvelo.org.
Fees: century, $30; metric century, $25; short ride, $10; after June 15 add
$5 late fee. Century rides include lunch, all rides include snacks, beverages,
and bandana. There will be mechanics on the course. Mass start for the century
rides is 7:30; for the short ride, 10 a.m.

#1This saturday @ 8:30 am you can ride one, two or three summits
starting from the Castle Lake turn off on W. A. Barr Road past the Lake Siskiyou
bridge (Dam). We will meet on the right hand side of the road accross
from the Castle Lake turn off and keep all our food & drink in ice chests
in the back of yours or my vehicle. The ride is Gumboot summit and back for
some food and drink, then Castle Lake Summit and then back for food and drink
followed by a long climb to the summit of Mt. Shasta and back. Sabrina Read
is the group leader.
#2 Dunsmuir Daze Ride-same start time
and place but this ride will go to the Castella Loop and back. Of course we
will stop for some cheer at Dunsmuir Days.
8-Saturday-The Death Ride
8&9-Seattle
to Portland 200mi/2day organized ride.
9-Sunday 8am Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery The "You'll be Wailin' by Whalan"
Summit ride Approximately 60 miles, including what may be the toughest climb
in the South County. Tom Chandler is the group leader; cell phone is 530-859-2235.
A note of caution: this ride includes five miles
of gravel road, this section may present gear and safety hazards. We
start at the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery and make the long downhill run through
the historic railroad town of Dunsmuir to the StatePark entrance. There, we
begin several miles of rolling, moderate climbs along a beautiful stream.
This idyllic riding continues to the first bridge, where the real grunt work
starts. It's approximately ten miles to the summit along a twisty chip-n-seal
road that hardly reflects the best work ever done by California's road crews.
It's plenty rideable, but if you like to pump those tires up to 140 psi, you
might regret it. Sections of this climb confront you with 15+ percent grades
(and perhaps the reality of your own advancing age, if you catch my drift).
Ouch. Near the summit the road turns to a hard packed dirt surface that's
actually more comfortable than the pavement. From there, we'll loop around
to Mumbo Summit and take that twisty canyon plunge back to Mt. Shasta and
our starting point. Halfway up the climb, don't forget to turn around and
look behind you for an awesome view of the Castle Crags.Bring plenty of water
as none is available after the climb begins. We will try to organize a water
stop somewhere, but that may not happen. Arm warmers are also a good idea.

to Lovers Camp (last years
pictures)and finish with the Quartz Valley loop. After the ride solar
